A stricken bulk cargo ship has been towed off the reef it was stuck on for the last six weeks.

MV Kaami was refloated in the Minch on Monday evening’s high tide.

The vessel has been towed to drydock in Kishorn.

Her owners are to assess the damage to the ship there.

An official marine accident investigation is also being carried out.

The Kaami ran aground in the Minch between Skye and Harris on 23 March.

The single-hold bulkcarrier had departed Belfast and was heading to Gotland in Sweden with a cargo of fuel pellets of recycled waste.

Her crew of eight Russian seafarers were evacuated by helicopter from the vessel six miles east of Scalpay.

The 90-metre-long vessel is damaged on one side. A portside tank containing around 27 tonnes of fuel was holed. Oil which escaped into the water was broken up by rough seas.

A rolling swell and weather conditions hampered preparations for salvage. The cargo was removed in stages to lighten the vessel and temporary repairs were made to the reef damaged hull to prevent her sinking during the refloat.
