Camanachd Leòdhais beat North Two pacesetters Caberfeidh with a 1-0 away win in Strathpeffer on Saturday.

The island team were recently turned over by the Ross-shire club on home soil, but approached the game with renewed confidence after a win over Inverness last week.

Iain Sinclair welcomed Scott Murray and Innes Lamont back to the team as well as giving youngster Ruairidh MacMillan his first start of the season.

The Leòdhasaich got off to a dream start on five minutes, Daniel Gaga Gallagher decided to volley clear a Cabers shy in his own half, finding Paul Duke at full centre who then spread it wide to Will Church on the left wing forward position.

The club's record scorer grabbed his first league goal of the season by deceiving his marker and then cooly drawing the keeper and rolling it past into the far corner.

Cabers seemed stunned and Church came close a couple of times, even hitting the wood work.

Paul Duke had a big shift against his Cabers namesake Paul Ross, and he was gamely supported by Paddy Sinclair and Murray in battling Ross and his colleagues Paddy Wilson and John Ritchie.

Cabers had their own chances, and there was a worry for the Leòdhasaich when captain Kenny "Duffy" Murray took a blow to the elbow, but the Lochcarron giant played on and had a game befotting his stature, with the defence excellent throughout the match.

The only blip was a penalty conceded on the stroke of halftime after a stramash - but Graham Cay first saved the low shot from Gavin McLaughlin and then under severe pressure dealt with the aftermath. Relief greeted the halftime whistle.

In the second half, under pressure from their home fans Cabers came at Lewis, but the recently improved fitness meant that the islanders stood firm, Cay making some incredible saves as Cabers struck the post on the hour mark, but it rebounded fortuitously to Innes Lamont who cleared the danger. Lewis rallied for the next ten but between 70 and 80 minutes, they came under a sustained barrage of pressure, however, Seumas Charity who had been magnificent all day stood firm at buckshee back and Donald Lamont firing into challenges.

Having weathered the storm Lewis had the chance to seal the victory when they received a penalty. There was some debate over who would take the penalty, with two missed attempts this season. However, it wasn’t third time lucky for Paddy Sinclair who took the step up, although his well struck effort went only an inch over the bar.

Both teams had chances in the closing stages, McLaughlin again rattling the post, although the Strathpeffer side let their frustration with the referee and themselves get the better of them and Lewis closed out the match for a famous win. Sean and Scott Macleod came on as late substitutes.

Leòdhas have no game this weekend, with Glengarry visiting on the 27th, the first visit of Duncan MacIntyre’s former club to the Hebrides.
