Parents of pupils at Shawbost School on Lewis have hit out at the Comhairle for taking away the head teacher for about half the week.

The Comhairle is imposing a shared headship between Shawbost and Breasclete.

In recent years, the district has seen the closure of Bragar and Carloway primaries along with S1/S2 secondary school at Shawbost.

Angry parents say they “have simply had enough” and demand the Comhairle provide full time management of the school instead of the 50% allocation.

The parent council fear the changes - which take effect next month - may be in breach of health and safety guidelines.

The slammed the Comhairle for “rushing through” the arrangements “without any meaningful consultation.”

A parent council spokesperson said: "Our consultation as Shawbost School parents consisted of one meeting on 17 February 2015 attended by the Director of Education where several questions were not answered and he also made some contradictory remarks.

“On one hand their reasons were financial and on the other it was educational benefits.

“From the evidence gathered it seems clear that this intention was known some months ago and our parent council are bewildered as to why this did not form part of the agenda at our meeting way back in November 2014. “

The spokesperson stressed: “We have no faith in the Comhairle's education department anymore and feel let down as there were also several promises made during the previous closures and we have yet to see them keep these.

“Our school should always have a suitably qualified, experienced and appropriately remunerated named person in charge for the whole week.

“That is not a lot to ask to ensure our children are in a school which has the best possible management structure and hope the Comhairle will see sense and reverse their decision.”

Recently elected councillor Alistair Maclennan commented: "This announcement has come out of the blue and I am very surprised at the way the Comhairle have dealt with this and will be looking for an early meeting to try and resolve this issue which I can see has had a huge effect on the parents."
