A 22 foot long timber row boat has been built by a rowing club based in Shawbost, Lewis.

Named Yackydoola, the St Ayles skiff is to be launched onto the freshwater Loch a’ Bhaile on Wednesday.

The craft which takes a crew of four rowers and a cox is the first boat to be built in the district in living memory.

The skiff will be joined on the water by a small fleet of three visiting rowing boats.

An Eathar Coastal Rowing Club has been busy boat building and reviving sea-going skills which were once widespread in the community but now largely lost in the modern era.

The launch part are assembling at Shawbost Old School, to avoid congestion at the shore, prior to the 10am launch.

A series of half hour free rowing taster sessions are to take place on the loch on Saturday.

Sessions depart from South Shawbost shore carpark.  No experience is required, safety equipment is provided.

The Yackydoola has been named after a boat which features in a locally penned Gaelic song written by Kenneth Macleod in the 1920’s or 30’s.
