Emergency agencies on severe weather alert             30/1/14

A storm surge is forecasted for Friday as a gale batters the islands at the same time as an exceptionally high tide.

Gusts up to 70 mph winds may affect exposed areas of the Western Isles. The Southern Isles are due to get the worst of the weather.

Strong south easterly winds are forecast to pile up the sea against causeways and coastal roads with the risk of waves and spray breaking over at high tide.

Times for high tide across the Hebrides varies according to location but is between 6 to 8 o’clock on Friday morning and evening.

Stornoway town centre may experience flooding. Local businesses have been provided with sandbags. There are also sandbags available for public use in the Bayhead area of Stornoway.

The Comhairle’s roads department will be monitoring Seilebost causeway and causeways in the Southern Isles. The Bràighe in Point will also be monitored around the 7am high water time.

School buses are scheduled to run as normal tomorrow morning, however, should buses be late in arriving at the Nicolson Institute due to any issues at the Bràighe, alternative arrangements will be made for senior pupils to sit their prelim examinations in the afternoon.

Morning home care could be delayed on Friday morning. Mobile Overnight Support Service  users will be contacted directly.

Further bad weather is expected on Sunday and Monday.
