Emergency agencies on severe weather alert 30/1/14
A storm surge is forecasted for Friday as a gale batters the islands at the same
time as an exceptionally high tide.
Gusts up to 70 mph winds may affect exposed areas of the Western Isles. The Southern
Isles are due to get the worst of the weather.
Strong south easterly winds are forecast to pile up the sea against causeways and
coastal roads with the risk of waves and spray breaking over at high tide.
Times for high tide across the Hebrides varies according to location but is between
6 to 8 o’clock on Friday morning and evening.
Stornoway town centre may experience flooding. Local businesses have been provided
with sandbags. There are also sandbags available for public use in the Bayhead area
of Stornoway.
The Comhairle’s roads department will be monitoring Seilebost causeway and causeways
in the Southern Isles. The Bràighe in Point will also be monitored around the 7am
high water time.
School buses are scheduled to run as normal tomorrow morning, however, should buses
be late in arriving at the Nicolson Institute due to any issues at the Bràighe, alternative
arrangements will be made for senior pupils to sit their prelim examinations in the
afternoon.
Morning home care could be delayed on Friday morning. Mobile Overnight Support Service
users will be contacted directly.
Further bad weather is expected on Sunday and Monday.
