Hebrides News

Gales or severe gales are expected to develop across much of Scotland on Thursday, the Met Office has warned.

The strongest winds are most likely across the Western Isles and north western areas, where gusts of 70 mph are possible, as the deep Atlantic low passes to west of the Hebrides.

Present forecasts indicate the gale will affect the islands from Wednesday evening through the first half of Thursday and remaining blustery later on Thursday.

The Met Office said: "Please be aware that potential impacts could include minor travel disruption with some bridge restrictions, and possible damage to trees and structures."

Additionally, large waves will build off northern and western coasts with the risk of some wave overtopping here.

A vigorous area of low pressure will pass to the north of Scotland from late Wednesday onwards, bringing a windy period for much of the north of the UK.

It looks likely that the rearward portion of this low will swing south across the far north of Scotland through Thursday, bringing a period of very strong and gusty winds to the warning area.

The strongest winds will arrive in the west early in the period, and transfer eastwards through the day.

Areas exposed to the northwest are expected to see the strongest winds, but winds may also funnel through the central belt at times bringing a risk of disruption there too.
