Severe gale forecast for Western Isles       31/1/14

A severe gale is forecast to affected parts of the islands this afternoon as a low pressure system moves in from the Atlantic. Speeds of 60mph are expected in exposed areas for a period later.

Strong winds affected the Southern Isles overnight and they are expected to get the worse of the weather this afternoon.

Police have been patrolling vulnerable areas this morning and no causeways or roads are reported to be affected so far.

A following onshore south easterly wind pushed the high tide up the Bràighe seawall in Point, Lewis, but the causeway remains open to traffic.

No flooding is reported in Stornoway town centre. Shopkeepers had sandbagged their premises last night after environment agency Sepa issued an alert .
