Severe gale forecast for Western Isles 31/1/14
A severe gale is forecast to affected parts of the islands this afternoon as a low
pressure system moves in from the Atlantic. Speeds of 60mph are expected in exposed
areas for a period later.
Strong winds affected the Southern Isles overnight and they are expected to get the
worse of the weather this afternoon.
Police have been patrolling vulnerable areas this morning and no causeways or roads
are reported to be affected so far.
A following onshore south easterly wind pushed the high tide up the Bràighe seawall
in Point, Lewis, but the causeway remains open to traffic.
No flooding is reported in Stornoway town centre. Shopkeepers had sandbagged their
premises last night after environment agency Sepa issued an alert .
