Hebrides News

The first severe gale of the autumn will arrive this week.

The high pressure system over the Western Isles will decline over Tuesday, giving way to a series of deep Atlantic lows midweek.

Periods of strong winds, rain and unsettled weather are forecast.

Wednesday night into Thursday will see southwesterly winds strengthen to severe gale force across the Hebrides, before veering westerly during the day.

The Met Office issued a severe weather alert, warning gusts are likely to reach 55-65 mph.

It highlighted the risk of some disruption to ferry services due to rough seas, while driving conditions may also be difficult.

The Met Office said: "A fairly deep area of low pressure will move east between Shetland and the Faeroes on Thursday morning, and gales and severe gales on its southern flank will affect parts of northern Scotland for a time.

"While wind strengths will not be unusual for the time of year, this will be the first severe gale of what has been a quiet autumn so far."
