Hebrides News

A severe gale forecast for the Western Isles is set to reach storm level on Monday.

The Met Office issued a yellow "be aware" warning of high winds for the Hebrides overnight.

It also highlighted the risk of flooding of low ground due to ground already soaked from previous down pours.

Gales will affected whole country on Monday with the Western Isles getting the brunt.

Southwesterly winds will pick up over Sunday and during Monday morning, when severe gales will affect parts of northwest mainland of Scotland and the Western Isles.

Gusts of wind of 65-75 mph are expected in places which may cause disruption to travel.

Large waves may wash over sea defences and causeways. High waves possibly over 12 metre high are forecast off the western coasts of the islands.

Very rough seas and storm force winds are expected in the Minch with ferry timetables more than likely to be affected.

The storm is due to continue into early Tuesday morning.

The Met Office chief forecaster said: "A deep low is set to develop near northwest Scotland late on Sunday.

"The system is complex, as it initially involves two separate low centres, one of which swings round to the southwest of the other.

"One effect of this is to enhance the swathe of very strong winds, but it also means that the exact outcome is more difficult to determine."
