A Lewis resident has been sentenced for seriously assaulting another islander.

Timothy Longstaff, 50, was previously convicted of severely injuring a man by repeatedly punching him on the head at a house in Bragar, on the west side of Lewis on May 31.

Lawyer, Angus Macdonald, had told Stornoway Sheriff Court that the victim was extremely drunk.

He said Longstaff - whose address was given as the Acres hostel, Stornoway - saw “movement towards him and assumed he was going to be attacked as happened previously.”

Sheriff David Sutherland imposed a two year community payback order.

He also instructed Longstaff to carry out 120 hours of unpaid community service work.
