Any smell emitting from a proposed incinerator burning fish farm entrails will be responsibility of environment agency SEPA to deal with, Uist councillors have been told.

Some 43 objections plus a petition with 35-signature have been submitted against the plans by George Macdonald to a four tonne incinerator in the existing bus garage near fuel pumps at Crossroads filling station in Benbecula.

The plant would burn dead fish and salmon farm waste which is presently buried on land.

Objectors suggested there was a danger of explosion given its close proximity to the petrol station pumps.

Councillors said the development was in the place and raised concerns over odours and noxious smells emitting from the premises.

Cllr Ronnie Mackinnon said: “Where is the

guarantee that there won’t any odour or smell?

“We had similar assurances for fish farm applications but they didn’t hold up

Cllr Neil Beaton warned there was an added danger of cars cutting across the forecourt in front of the garage to get tot he petrol pumps.

The council’s planning committee recommendation for approval with operational conditions is set to be ratified by the full council next week.
