Funding to tackle mental health discrimination    2/6/14

A new scheme to provide funding to community groups to tackle mental health stigma has been launched.

The Community Innovation Fund which will award grants of up to £20,000 is run by See Me - Scotland’s national programme for ending mental health discrimination.

In Scotland, one in four people will experience a mental health problem during their lives, which can lead to them becoming isolated, excluded from everyday activities and finding it harder to get jobs. 80% of people with mental health problems report experiencing stigma and discrimination during and after their illness.

Successful projects will combat these issues by working as part of the ‘see me’ movement for change.

See Me programme director, Judith Robertson, said: “Around three quarters of us know someone with a mental health problem, yet people living with mental health illnesses can still feel isolated.

“We are looking to fund projects which can enhance people’s ability to be empowered and challenge stigma and discrimination

“We want to build a movement of people who will tackle mental health stigma and discrimination in Scotland and bring about lasting changes in the behaviour of people and institutions.”

Local grant applications must be received by August 1st and initial concepts for the Community Innovation Fund need to be submitted by the end of this month.
