Personal items belonging to a missing tourist have been found in cliff-top searches in Lewis.

 

Torsten Kulke was last seen in the Aird Uig area on Friday and extensive searches have been carried out.

 

A rucksack containing 48-year-old’s belongings has been recovered near cliffs in the area between Crowlista and Gallan Head.

 

Mr Kulke did not have a tent or sleeping bag and the backpack was the only item he was carrying it is understood.

 

When last seen was wearing a white top, khaki trousers, heavy walking boots and carrying a rucksack or backpack. Mr Kulke is 6ft 3in tall and of medium build with light brown hair.

 

His family in Germany is being kept updated of developments.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Inspector Jane Nicolson said: "I can confirm that personal items belonging to Torsten were recovered during searches in the area where he most recently seen.

 

"We are working with colleagues in Germany to keep his family informed of developments.

 

"Our enquiries are ongoing and I would again urge anyone with information or anyone who believes they may have seen Torsten to get in touch with us by calling 101, quoting reference NH 2952/17."

 

Family in Germany reported the 48-year-old missing, raising concerns for his wellbeing.

 

Western Isles Police established he travelled to Scotland and later boarded a flight to Lewis.

 

After arriving at Stornoway airport on Friday afternoon Mr Kulke hired a taxi to take him to Uig.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

He asked to be dropped off in an isolated spot on a narrow single track road near Loch Mheacleit between the villages of Eristeadh and Aird Uig.

 

Search squads from Stornoway Coastguard - including Stornoway, Bragar, Breasclete and Miavaig rescue teams - as well as Hebrides Mountain Rescue Team have tramped many hundreds of miles over the moorland and hills.

 

Searchers were also airlifted onto a mountain range as efforts continued.

 

Stornoway coastguard helicopter has made repeated sweeps across the district.

Boat operator Seatrek Cruises has also assisted with the search operation.
