A large scale search is being organised in an attempt to find the missing fishermen from the crab boat which sank on Saturday.

Paul Alliston, from Stornoway and who lived in Lochs, Lewis, was the skipper of the MFV Louisa which took on water and rapidly sunk by the bow about 400 metres off Mingulay in the early hours of Saturday.

It is understood the 42-year-old - also widely known as Paul Macmillan - could not swim.

Searches of the area where the boat sank were conducted by Barra lifeboat on Monday. Further searches by local boats have also taken place.

A large number of volunteers are responding to a call to carry out a major search for the missing man on Thursday.

islanders are coming from all parts of the Western isles to help.

A number of Stornoway and Lewis travelled down by ferry on Wednesday. Others from Harris and Uist are due to join the group for a briefing meeting in Castlebay Hall later.

Boat owners from Uist and Eriskay are taking their vessels across in the morning to assist.

It is expected that groups of volunteers will be transported from Castlebay and dropped off by boat to conduct shoreline searches on Mingulay and the Barra Head islands.

Boats will also carry out searches of the sea area around the islands south of Barra.

A spokesman said: "We are organising a full-scale sea and land search for the missing crewman from the Louisa.

"Any boat owners who can spare the time and any other persons who can willing to walk the shorelines around the area are asked to meet in Castlebay Hall on Wednesday night at 7pm to discuss plans for Thursday's search."
