Searches have been carried out for a fisherman lost off Barra after the MFV Louisa sank.

Barra RNLI lifeboat transported around 15 coastguard volunteers from Barra and Uist to Mingulay and the neighbouring island of Berneray - part of an archipelago known locally as the Bishop's Isles - to carry out coastal searches of both islands in case the man was washed ashore

A Coastguard rescue team from Stornoway covered the Uists in case of other emergencies.

Police Scotland helicopters also carried out aerial sweeps over the sea.

Benbecula airport staff opened the airfield to allow the search and rescue aircraft to refuel.

Police Scotland has launched an inquiry into the accident.

Chief Inspector Alastair Garrow said: “All of the partners are determined to do everything they can to help the family and the community deal with this tragedy.

"Police Scotland have an enquiry team working alongside other agencies and the known circumstances will be reported to the procurator fiscal.

"There will be further investigations necessary to fully establish what has happened."
