Bomb squad summoned after sea mines found on beach     14/10/14

Three suspected World War Two sea mines have been found on a beach on Lewis.

A Royal Navy bomb squad from Faslane is heading to the island to blow up the devices.

The mines were spotted between the low water mark and the shore edge by a local walking by Steinish beach on the outskirts of Stornoway on Sunday.

The man checked them out on Google and reported them to Stornoway coastguards after realising they matched photos of wartime explosives.

The mines are thought to have been exposed by last week’s storms.

A Stornoway Coastguard spokesman said there was minimum risk to people as the ordnances are under water.

It is believed the bomb squad is travelling via the Harris ferry and will carry out a controlled explosion on Wednesday.
