Scottish Communities League Cup visits Lewis              6/3/13

The Scottish Communities League Cup (SCLC) trophy has visited Stornoway on the final leg of its Wave of Support trophy tour to promote respect, responsibility and tolerance to football fans and families throughout Scotland.

The SCLC is, for the second year running, sponsored by the Scottish Government and, with the help of all SFL and SPL clubs, is coordinating a national Trophy Tour to celebrate and grow the appeal and awareness of existing club, school and other community football and sports initiatives across the country.

On its first visit to Lewis, the trophy was given the red carpet treatment on board Loganair’s direct flight from Glasgow to Stornoway, before visiting pupils at Stornoway Primary and Laxdale Primary.

Over 100 excited youngsters had the opportunity to have their picture taken with the famous trophy and learn about the importance of respect, responsibility and tolerance on and off the pitch.

Taking responsibility for ensuring the up enjoyed safe passage to Stornoway, Loganair chief operating officer Phil Preston, said: “Our flight crews are honoured to have participated in the Wave of Support Trophy Tour by bringing the Scottish Communities League Cup to the Isle of Lewis, Orkney and Shetland.

“We are proud of our long history of providing essential air services to the country’s most remote communities and, with the tour of the cup aiming to promote the positive side of football across the entire country, we were happy to offer a helping hand.

“Transporting this historic trophy these past few months has been a true privilege for Loganair.”

He added: “Our crews and airport staff have plenty of experience in bringing iconic sporting symbols to the people of Scotland having carried the Olympic Flame around the islands last June.”

Active schools co-ordinator Claire Scott  said: “It’s great to be involved in the trophy tour. The kids were really excited to have their photo taken with the cup.

“Community football projects are a brilliant way to get young people interested in the game. Through football we can encourage kids to work together, play to one another’s strengths and, by creating opportunities for them to be more active, help identify Scotland’s future sports stars.”
