Only days left to register for independence vote     26/8/14

Voters have under a week to register for the Scottish independence referendum.

Anyone who fails to registered by next Tuesday, 2 September, will not be able to take part in the historic poll.

Interest in the vote is high with over 50,000 registration forms downloaded from the Electoral Commission’s website in just ten days between 11 and 20 August.

Some 2.5 million copies of the commission’s voting guide were sent out and a further 33,436 copies downloaded during the same period.

The commission’s call centre has handled 6,670 enquiries from members of the public with large numbers requesting registration and postal vote application forms.

Andy O’Neill, Head of Scotland Office at the Electoral Commission, said: “There’s a huge amount of interest in the referendum and that’s reflected in the unprecedented response to the first ten days of our campaign.

He encouraged anyone who has not already registered to do so as soon as possible.
