Hebrides News

Power supplies to more than 68,000 customers across the north of Scotland have been restored by Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution, following the hurricane winds which have caused widespread disruption to the electricity network.

Western Isles have borne the full brunt of the storm.

Some 3,304 homes and properties are without power in the Hebrides on Friday night going into Saturday.

A similar number in Skye are also affected.

The severe weather conditions have been hampering efforts to repair equipment damaged by the storm.

Where it is safe to do so, engineers will continue to work into the night to restore power to a further 28,000 customers.

Some engineering depots will remain open through the night, with the rest opening at 6am.

Rodney Grubb, Head of Operations for SHEPD, explained some of the challenges facing the engineering teams: “We have a monumental task in getting to the damaged equipment. Trees and branches have made some rural roads impassable.

“We are also having to remove airborne debris tangled up in our power lines. We will work as long as we can but working in the dark can be potentially dangerous. It is regrettable that some of our customers may be left without power overnight.”
