Allan welcomes independence referendum consultation       25/1/12

MSP Alasdair Allan, today attended an historic statement by the First Minister, Alex Salmond, setting out the detailed plans for the forthcoming independence referendum.

Alasdair Allan commented: “Today’s historic announcement by the First Minister makes clear that Scotland will decide our own future and set the rules for our own referendum.

“We will decide the timings of the referendum and seek to ensure that all those living in Scotland on the electoral register get a vote, including 16 and 17 year olds.

“The Scottish Government is very happy to engage in talks with the London Government about proposals to extend a so-called section 30 order to minimise the prospect of legal debate. The First Minister made clear that this won’t be accepted if strings come attached, allowing the UK Government to interfere in Scotland’s referendum.”

The isles MSP added: “Despite bluster from the UK Government the Scottish Government have also announced that the question will be an easy to understand “Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country” and that there will be very strict spending limits for both Yes and No campaigns.

“Of course, the purpose of a consultation is to hear everyone's view, so I would invite all constituents, interest groups and organisations to respond and take part in the most important debate on Scotland’s future for 300 years.”
