Allan welcomes Scotland’s “Budget for Jobs”          9/2/12

MSP Alasdair Allan has welcomed the passing of the Scottish Government’s budget for 2012/3, which was voted through the Scottish Parliament..

He highlighted two areas of extra spending of particular benefit to the Western Isles - £68 million to be spent on improving broadband primary in rural areas over the next three years and £11 million announced today to improve maintenance grants to students at college.

Alasdair Allan commented: “As Finance Secretary, John Swinney, pointed out today, Scotland needs jobs and investment for the future and that means giving Scotland real power over our own economic decisions and deciding how we raise as well as spend taxes.

“At a time when the Tory/Lib-Dem Government at Westminster is cutting Scotland’s budget by £1.3 billion this year alone Scotland needs those powers more than ever.

“However, the Scottish Government was nonetheless able to prioritise some important areas of spending, including £68 million to be spent over the next three years improving broadband connections in rural Scotland and £11 million to ensure better incomes for students at Scotland’s further education colleges.

“Despite the usual bluster the Labour party were unable to come up with a single constructive suggestion as to how the budget might be changed or improved, which makes their decision to vote against it tonight all the more disappointing.

“These are difficult times for Scotland, and the Scottish Government continues to demand the powers that Scotland needs to succeed economically.”
