The annual National Schools Gaelic Debate kicks off on Tuesday with 20 teams from 18 schools taking part.

Since its inception the competition has gone from strength to strength and is now seen as one of the highlights in the academic calendar of Scotland’s secondary schools.

The first round of debates starts at 1pm at the main council building in Stornoway with a further event at 6.30pm.

The second round will take place in An Lanntair on Wednesday  starting at 10am and 2pm.

The four teams with the highest points will progress to the semi-final stages which will take place in Edinburgh at the end of November.

The final will be broadcasted live from the Scottish Parliament on 25 of November.

Chairperson of the BT Scotland National Gaelic Schools’ Debate Management Committee, Calum Iain MacLeod, commented: “I would actively encourage members of the public to go along and support the 2015 Debate.

"Through the course of the first two rounds in Stornoway we see some excellent debates – a showcase of the strength of the debating and communication skills of our Gaelic speaking youngsters."
