Two schoolbuses slid off icy roads in the Western Isles this morning.

The islands have experienced an overnight snowfall with roads hazardous for drivers.

One Comhairle-operated vehicle went off the snow-covered road through Torlum after 8.30am today.

The Comhairle said the road had been gritted earlier in the morning.

Locals said the road was slippery at the time. Other vehicles are said to have to have slid on the route.

A digger is believed to have been used to pull the bus out of the ditch.

In another incident, a school minibus skidded off the road in Uig, Lewis.

A Comhairle spokesman said: “In both cases it appears that the road conditions were not good and unfortunately the buses slid off the road.

Thankfully no-one was seriously hurt and alternative arrangements were made to transport the pupils to school.”
