More schools added to official hit list             7/6/10

Another six schools face being added to the official hit list for closing Western Isles schools.

The latest raft of schools would increase the list of threatened schools to 11.

Ultimately the Comhairle is considering shutting a total of 18 schools over the coming years.

The strategy would result in the savage scrapping of nearly half the islands' schools.

Education bosses recommend that Eriskay, Bernera, North Tolsta, Tong and Eoligarry primary schools should now go out to formal consultaion.

In addition, Paible secondary would be included if councillors agree this week.

Statutory consultations on Paible and Eriskay are earmarked for this autumn but could be delayed until 2012 for the remaining four schools.

Education bosses recommend that Paible should shut in two years with Eriskay in 2013.

Then in 2014, Bernera pupils would go to Breasclete, North Tolsta and Tong children would be bussed to Back while Castlebay School would be the only school left on Barra.

The updated hit list overlaps with an extensive round of official closure consultations taking place this month in Uist, Harris and Lewis.

The council says the closures are driven by plummeting pupils numbers, too many decaying schools and a lack of cash to build new schools.

But opponents point out that it would have a negative impact on communities and deters young families from settling in the area.
