A worldwide search is underway to try to locate as many as possible of the people who entered secondary education in Lewis and Harris in 1970.

Most of them turn 60 this year and a two-day reunion is planned for September in Stornoway.  It is hoped they will be able to visit the new Nicolson Institute and the redeveloped Lews Castle.

They last held a reunion in 1998, but many of those who missed out then because of other commitments have often said they would like another opportunity to find out what has become of former classmates and to reminisce about bygone days.

Around 300 students were in the 1970 cohort in Lewis and Harris, many of whom have gone on to work all over the world.

Moira Maclean, a member of the organising committee, said: “We’ve already got a long list of names of people who went to the Nicolson Institute, the Lews Castle and some pupils from Harris who also came to Stornoway for their secondary education in the mid-70s.

“What we need now is for people to contact us, or to contact all the people they know, to tell them about the reunion so that we can get as many people as possible to attend.”

She added: “We want our former classmates to make every effort to contact us and all the people they know, to ensure they know about the reunion and put the dates in their diaries. Just give us their contact details and we’ll do the rest.

“The plans for the two days are coming along and the aim is to keep it simple to allow people as much time as they want to talk over old times.”

The committee has set up a facebook page - SY Reunion 60 in 18 - and an email address syreunion60in18@gmail.com to enable people to keep up with the developing plans and also pass on contact details of people they know.
