►  Call to re-open Sandwickhill School for pupils

Stornoway Primary is overcrowded according to an island councillor.

Rae Mackenzie said the “worsening overcrowding situation” results in the lack of a classrooms, a proper gym, changing facilities, storage, and a decent sports pitch.

No extra space has been created within the school despite some £2 million of work on the building - the cash went on the external fabric.

Mr Mackenzie called for a report to look at the accommodation, facilities, projected pupil numbers and demands of pre-school education at the school.

The report will be debated by councillors in September.

The Stornoway South councillor said “urgent action needs to be taken” as the number of children attending the campus was set to increase.

He reiterated a call - reported by Hebrides News two months ago to - reopen Sandwickhill School for children from that district.

Mr Mackenzie pointed out a major housebuilding exercise will have creating over 120 new homes - many with young families.

He queried: “Where are these children going to go? Are they going to be crammed into an already over-crowded school (in Stornoway).”
