An official opening ceremony is being held today for the new North Uist primary school.

The modern education facility at Bayhead is a centralised campus replacing three primary schools on the island.

Lochmaddy, Paible and Carinish primary schools have now closed.

The £9 million campus on the site of the former Paible primary on west side of the island opened to pupils at the start of the school term in August.

Around 90 pupils plus 30 nursery children are enrolled.

Unlike the Private Finance Initiative schools at Daliburgh and in Lewis and Harris, the maintenance and facility management of Sgoil Uibhist a Tuath will be undertaken in-house by the Comhairle.,

The total cost of the new school campus is just under £9 million, made up of £2.2 million from Scottish Government and £6.6 million by the Comhairle.
