Plans for the former Scalpay School building to be changed into office space, artists’ studios and shops have been submitted to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar for consideration.

The North Harris Trust’s planning application seeks to change the use of both the school’s canteen and croileagan buildings, as well as the horsa hut, classrooms, staffroom, office space, library and lounge areas.

Proposed works at Scalpay School building include extending the current car parking spaces from three to 10.

And already it’s anticipated the changes will allow space for nine units to be rented by five tenants (two of which will rent two rooms).

Plans will allow for seven staff to be employed, with more office space still available, and the building to be opened for use from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturdays.

The planning application aims to turn the former Staffroom into North Harris Trust office space; while the Music/Library area will become the Java’s Crafty Library arts and craft shop.

It is hoped to change Classrooms 1 and 2 into Artists Studio and Gallery spaces to be rented by painter Geoff Stear; and an Arts and Crafts workshop rented by Shaun Hayes to be established in the former Art classroom.

Mr Hayes will also rent the lounge area for temporary storage.

The proposals also include the Pink Sheep Studio shop, run by Richard and Jayne Green, to be based in the school’s old dining area.

Mrs Sheila Roderick’s Scalpay Linen company also wants to establish a loom shed for the weaving, spinning and dying of wool in the former playgroup room.
