Angry residents in a Lewis community have launched a petition against plans to amalgamate them with a neighbouring council ward.

The Sandwick, Parkend, Holm and the Mackenzie Park area will be removed from the Stornoway South ward and merged with Point.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland has lodged the changes for the approval of the Scottish Government.

The current boundaries of the Point ward will be extended to include the Parkend and Holm area and renamed Sgìre an Rubha agus Sanndabhaig (Point & Sandwick).

Kenny Duncan, one of the campaigners against the move, said: "We, the residents of Parkend, Holm and Mackenzie estate are drafting up a petition to stop our area from being banded into the Point ward.

"Not only is it a crazy idea but we are desperate to hold onto the services of Charlie Nicolson, the most hardworking councillor on the island."

Mr Duncan said campaigner planned to visit every household in the affected area to collect signatures.

He added: "We have under a week to lodge this petition and hand it in.

"We're just getting a bit sick of 'being in the middle' down here.

"Sandwick School was closed down then permission was given to build a massive housing estate next door to it and now this.

"Where's the forward planning, where's the sense?"

Mr Duncan said: "Charlie Nicolson has worked tirelessly for, and set up, the Parkend, Holm and Mackenzie estate residents Association.

"He keeps the whole area ticking over in a way I - no disrespect - don't think a Point councillor will be able to."

In addition, an online petition has also been set up by resident Amy McClements at Sandwick, Parkend, Holm and Mackenzie Park want to stay part of town.

Ms McClements stated: "Charlie Nicolson has been an asset to the community and we do not want to lose him. Please sign this petition to help us show our concern."
