Salmon anglers would require a special licence and tighter controls on what they could catch under Scottish Government proposals.

A permit from the river owner would continue to operate.

It is proposed the fishery landlord would apply for a licence which would lay down a limit on the number of wild salmon to be taken on their river.

The proprietors of a rod and line fishery would be required to regulate what individual anglers take.

If granted, the licence would set down the fishing season, or the size or weight of fish which could be taken.

In an effort to conserve Atlantic salmon stocks, the government would stop fish being taken from a particular river if the sustainability of the fishery is in doubt.

Specific types of equipment - including barbed hooks - could be banned.

A consultation has been launched to seek views to ban the killing of wild salmon except under licence along with an accompanying carcass tagging scheme.

The scheme is proposed to start next year.
