Some 12% full time jobs were created in the Western Isles salmon farming industry with 363 people in the workforce.

But the total pay decreased by 8% to nearly £9 million according to the annual economic report by the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO).

The industry is a huge employer in the islands, contributing to the local economy.

However, capital investment across the Western Isles fell to £3.65 million in 2016.

The industry spent £8.4 million (down 11%) with other local businesses.

Across Scotland, capital investment remains steady at £63 million with over £390 million spent last year in the Scottish supply chain.

Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of the SSPO, said: “Scottish salmon is now both Scotland’s and the UK’s top food export and the wholesale recognition of its quality and provenance has continued to boost industry’s investment confidence.”

He said the sector provides “vital economic and social support” in the Hebrides.

“In addition to the business of salmon farming and the demonstrable benefits that brings, the industry is also committed to supporting local communities where staff and their families live and work,” he added.
