Developing sailing tourism in Scotland is to be the focus of a new research project.

The study will provide an update on the current economic contribution sailing makes to the Scottish economy.

It aims to highlight potential for growth across the industry.

At present, some 2,700 jobs are directly supported by sailing tourism, underlining the importance of the sailing to coastal and island communities.

The research is being funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, The Crown Estate and Scottish Canals.

Paul Bancks of Crown Estate in Scotland said it would help devise a sailing tourism development strategy.

He said: “The Crown Estate is keen to play a part in ensuring that sailing continues to thrive in Scotland and as manager of approximately half the coastline around Scotland, marine stewardship is one area where we can help communities to realise tourism opportunities."

Head of tourism for Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Chris Taylor, said: “Marine tourism, in particular the sailing market, brings high spending visitors to many of our more remote and fragile communities across the Highlands and Islands.

"This research will provide valuable up to date information and economic data for the sector and will assist communities, businesses and social enterprises to make the most of the opportunities that sailing tourism offers the region.”
