Sabbath was made for man                30/7/14

Sir,

The Rev Allan W. MacColl ( Concern over Sabbath cycling event )tells us that we should refrain from trampling on the Sabbath and says that it is a source of great grief that an organised cycle race took place on the Sabbath.

Firstly this was not a race but people going out for a ride on their day of rest from secular employment to admire God's handiwork in Creation.

As the Bible says in the Old Testament, Exodus 23 "Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed."

As a Christian who regularly worships in Church and then worships the Lord again at every sight of beauty, cycling is indeed a refreshment.

Furthermore, the Lord himself broke the Sabbath commandments and stated "The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath."

How much more of a Christian witness this would have been if the minister had offered to come down to the start and pray for all those taking part, for their safety and that God would open their eyes to see his invisible qualities in what has been made. Then those taking part would have seen Christ in action rather than seeing yet another Pharisee. As a Christian who follows a Christ that was numbered with the harlots and tax collectors I suspect I know what Christ would have done.
