Concern over Sabbath cycling event     12/7/14

Sir,

The Word of God exhorts us to avoid trampling on the holy Sabbath, ‘If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day’, and promises a great blessing if we do so, ‘I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father’ (Isaiah 58:13-14).

It is a source of great grief to God’s people therefore to hear that an organised cycle race took place in Lewis on the Lord’s holy day.

We are informed that ‘Audax ethos is about finishing within time constrictions’ but these poor souls should be thinking rather of the endless eternity ahead, ‘Can thine heart endure, can thy hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee, I the Lord have spoken it, and will do it’ (Ezekiel 22:14).
