Rural communities suffer mobile signal problems    17/8/14

A significant majority of mobile phone users in areas like the Western Isles experience having no signal at least once a week, according to industry research.

A report commissioned by telcoms watchdog Ofcom found there is poor quality mobile network service outside cities.

The further away from an urban area, the worst the chance of successfully making a mobile phone call.

Some 64% respondents living in remote rural areas - defined as communities with a population of less than 2,000 people - experience problems in getting a signal at least a few times a month.

Up to nearly half could not make calls at least once a week while 28% reported suffering signal problems every day.
