Gaelic rockers Runrig will bow out of the music scene with a farewell tour next year.

After 45 years performing the band is pulling the curtain down on their long career.

The big final gig - titled The Last Dance - will be staged in Stirling in August 2018.

Some 25,000 fans are expected to attend the event below Stirling Castle.

Their last tour will take in shows in Germany, Denmark and England throughout the early summer.

A statement from Runrig said the decision to split was was “very difficult and heart wrenching.”

“We are now simply at that point in time where longevity and circumstance have to be balanced against what is right for the art and the muse.

“We feel that the time for this decision is now upon us, and we embrace it with a sense of positivity, but tinged with understandable sadness and reflection.”

As individual musicians they will not stop their won writing, recording or performances, “but Runrig in its present form, as we’ve known it for 45 years, will come to an end.”
