Prince Edward and his wife Sophie joked about who did the ironing at home as they stamped a roll of Harris Tweed with a 100-year-old trademark which protects the famous Hebridean cloth against copycat impostors.

On the Western Isles’ visit today, each took a turn to hot-press the unique orb emblem onto the textile which signifies it is the world’s only commercially produced hand-woven tweed.

At the Harris Tweed Authority offices, the royal couple heard that since 1911 every piece of finished tweed has been stamped with the orb mark proving it was woven at weavers’ own home and manufactured exclusively in the Western Isles.

During the visit, the royal pair chatted to islanders and tourists who gathered to see them and also spent time with many teenagers from youth groups.
