Torch carriers will lead a procession of hundreds of people for the opening of the Royal National Mòd in Stornoway.

The nine-day Gaelic event which kicks off in the Western Isles in just four weeks time also marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of  Mòd organisers, An Comunn Gàidhealach.

The Mòd's new tradition of a torchlight procession - accompanied by Lewis Pipeband - will weave from Stornoway town centre to the Lewis Sports Centre for the opening ceremony on 14 October.

There, after the customary speeches, Mischa Macpherson Trio and Gaelic supergroup, Dàimh, who were crowned Folk Band of the Year at the 2015 Scots Trad Music Awards, will perform on stage.

The 2015 Mòd in Oban generated close to £3 million for the host town and An Comunn is confident this year's event will have a similar impact on the Western Isles.

Thousands of competitors from Scotland and across the world are due to take part or watch over 200 competitions in Highland dancing, sport, literature and drama, as well as Gaelic music and song.

Alongside the main competitions, The Mòd Fringe will run a bustling programme filled with traditional music, unique poetry, numerous concerts and art forms of every description.

John Morrison, chief executive of An Comunn Gàidhealach, said: “The Western Isles has always given The Mòd a warm welcome, so we’re thrilled to be returning after five years.

"We’ve received a tremendous amount of entries for this year’s competitions and we know there will be some amazing talent to see."
