Putting a roof over people’s heads in Stornoway town centre is an idea put forward by Stornoway North SNP Councillor Gordon Murray.

Mr Murray suggested roofing the ‘Narrows’ with a Perspex covering making the short street more weather-resistant and inviting.

Cllr Murray stated: "The town centre is needing something new to attract more people and I think making it weather resistant may be the boost that's needed.

“If there was some cover, it may allow people the opportunity to socialise in the centre, the possibility of market stalls and increase the commercial activity which has seen a drop in recent times.

“It may also encourage more local produce being sold in the town.

"There seems to be an appetite from people to at least explore this and I have already asked the council to help me in taking this idea to the next stage.

“It has been discussed before, but I think given the decrease in activity and also the increase in tourism, it could bring an economic boost to our town.”

Mr Murray voiced the suggestion at a meeting of Stornoway Vision - a multi-agency group which seeks to reinforce and connect the strengths of Stornoway to create a vibrant, accessible and connected place.
