Lifeboat charity launch Gaelic safety tips       14/10/14

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has launched its first ever Gaelic resource for schools at the Royal National Mod in Inverness this week.

The lifesaving charity has a UK and Republic of Ireland wide Youth Education programme designed to save lives at sea by conveying safety messages to young people in schools, youth groups and in the community by promoting its top tips for staying safe by the water.

This is the first time there has been a resource in Scots Gaelic.

Death by drowning is the third most common causes of accidental death in young people.

Kenny MacLeod of Scalpay, RNLI Youth Education Presenter and Lifeboat Sea Safety Officer attached to Leverburgh Lifeboat station has been championing the need for a Gaelic resource in Scottish schools.

He is attending the Mod In Inverness this week to launch the new safety poster.

Mr Macleod said: “On my travels to schools in the islands and on the mainland giving RNLI water safety presentations, many teachers have requested a schools’ resource, in Gaelic, with the four top safety tips given to the children in my school talk.

“Children who live near the coast are as much at risk as pupils in the city.  We can all become over familiar with what is on our doorstep and it is helpful to have a visual reminder of the RNLI safety tips on the classroom wall.”
