Rip-off petrol tax                      14/2/12

Sirs,

Why is everyone failing to note one vital element of the fuel cost in the Hebrides and other remote areas?

Tax - lets not forget that first they apply duty of 60.97 pence per litre, and THEN they add the VAT - so you are taxed on the fuel AND taxed on the duty, so when they puty the duty up, the VAT automatically increases.

The vital part is that they VAT the inflated price of fuel here - which means we pay more Tax than say, London. What HAS to happen is that we have our VAT charged only on the fuel, not the duty, and that the VAT cannot be higher than that taken from the average UK price of fuel.

Otherwise I think it would be 'just' if MP's were forced to pay the dearest UK price for fuel wherever they live. it would be astonishing how quickly the issue would be dealt with then!

Yes the fuel companies are ripping us off, but so is the Government.
