Scottish Labour's candidate for the Western Isles, Rhoda Grant, has opened her campaign office in Stornoway.

The premises at 34 Cromwell Street will be the party's nerve centre in the fight for votes for the Scottish Parliament elections taking place on 5 May.

Rhoda Grant said: "Our campaign has been underway for a number of weeks and I am getting a great response on the doorsteps."

The island-born candidate added: "In the wake of the recent council cuts, and almost certainly more to come, our communities are looking for an MSP who will ensure that their voice is heard."

The recent debacle relating to crofting payments, the threat to Cal-Mac, the potential of more cuts to education and the care of our elderly are big issues concerning islanders, say Labour.

Mrs Grant said: "The Labour message is clear, the austerity policies of the the SNP aren't working and are hitting our islands hard.

"Let's move towards an anti-austerity agenda through fairer taxation and properly funded public services."
