An islander has been jailed for what is thought to be the first “revenge porn” threat case in the Western Isles.

Stornoway man, Neil Lawson, previously pleaded guilty at the town's sheriff court to repeatedly threatening to post sexual photos and recordings of a former girlfriend on the internet.

Lawyer Ken Macdonald acknowledged sheriff David Sutherland previously called the offence “abhorrent” but urged him to spared his client a prison sentence.

The couple embarked on a “volatile” relationship," explained Mr Macdonald.

He said: “They did a stupid thing: they took photographs of each other in graphic poses.”

Such actions are “very dangerous” if couples fall out and here there was a "big fallout and an exchange of threats between them,” he added.

However, as in many revenge porn cases, “the  threat was not carried out and he did not put it on the internet,” stressed the solicitor.

Lawson is “as much sinned against by the other side,” he added.

Sentencing Lawson to six months, Sheriff Sutherland stressed: “This behaviour will not be tolerated.

“The nature of the offence is such …I consider in this case there is no alternative (but prison).”
