Cheaper ferry travel is now available on the inter-island ferries.

Ticket prices for passengers and cars on the Sound of Barra and the Sound of Harris have been slashed.

The Castlebay-Lochboisdale route as well as the Tarbert/Lochmaddy run will also see lower prices.

The fare cuts are included in the expansion of number of routes benefiting from the Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) scheme.

The Western Isles mainland ferry routes already receive lower rates through RET, bringing economic and tourism benefits to island communities.

Now ticket prices for passengers and vehicles on the remaining 14 services are included, brought in with today’s switchover to the winter timetable.

The price of a single passenger fare on these routes will fall by an average of 44%, whilst car fares will be cut by an average of 65% said the Scottish Government

The Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) scheme involves setting ferry fares on the basis of the cost of travelling an equivalent distance by road.

RET was introduced for passengers, cars, small commercial vehicles and coaches on main Western ferries in in October 2008.
