Hebrides News

Sir,

I would greatly appreciate if the revisionists Mr Archie Harper and Dr David Wilson would state exactly when Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) was introduced to the Western Isles.

Cheaper ferry fares were introduced for a period - and were most welcome, but RET fares have never been part of life and travel in these islands. They may also reflect on the fact that ferry fares have increased considerably over the past six years ago.

Stornoway - Ullapool for a passenger has increased by 27.4% from £7.22 to £9.20. A car journey has increased by 36.6% over the same period from £36.22 to £49.50.

In short, it's more expensive to travel by ferry today than the heady days when the SNP used to con us with terms like RET.

However, I'm sure SNP activists like Mr Harper and Dr Wilson won't allow the simple facts and truths stated above to get in the way of their next rant. They would best serve our islands if they could get our MP and MSP to focus on unravelling the ferry debacle they are presiding over.
