Restructuring the High Church         22/4/14

The split has left Stornoway’s High Church in turmoil with no elders left and many deacons also expected to move on.

Four office bearers from a neighbouring Church of Scotland have been appointed as assessor elders.

The High will not operate its Sunday School until the position becomes clearer, instead holiday clubs gatherings will run for children.

About half the congregation is leaving the Church of Scotland over its decision to allow openly gay ministers.

The departing members - opposed to openly homosexual ministers in the national church - had wanted to lease the Matheson Road building from the denomination.

But the remaining worshippers who opted to stay are believed to have enough numbers to continue as a congregation. The Church of Scotland plans to get a minister for them.

The annual general meeting of the High is being held tonight (Tues).
