Despite piercing hail showers thousands of islanders paid their respects to the war dead at remembrance services across the Western Isles on Sunday.

A large crowd observed a two-minute silence at the islands’ main service at the Lewis War Memorial in Stornoway.

Wreaths were laid by representatives of the armed forces, Merchant Navy, British Legion, RNLI, emergency services, Western Isles Council, as well as by uniformed and youth organisations and schools.

Rev William Heenan, St Columba’s Church of Scotland, led the service.

Earlier, members of the emergency, uniformed and youth organisations attended Remembrance services in various churches in Stornoway and also participated in a parade in the town centre.

Wreaths were laid at some community and village memorials on Saturday but most ceremonies took place the following day.
