Sir,

What a strange response to Matt Bruce’s letter from the convener of the SNP in Lewis and Harris.

Firstly, Matt was simply passing on the views of the many islanders and visitors who have commented on the referendum litter that pollutes our beautiful islands.

Matt holds no positions in the local Labour Party therefore it seems strange that his perfectly reasonable and light hearted request is met with such an angry response targeted not at the litter louts but the local Labour Party.

Further confusion arises as throughout my time as an active campaigner for a NO vote in the 2014 Referendum I was constantly reminded that the vote was not about the SNP. If that was the case then why does the SNP’s local head honcho feel the need to defend these vandals?

Even stranger that this defence of the indefensible comes at a time when SNP representatives seem to have fallen out of love with the idea of independence, and debate on the issue is blocked at their own annual conference.

Finally, speaking on behalf of the Labour Party locally, I can assure Mr MacDonald that our elected representatives' actions (and inactions) have been noted and we look forward to asking the appropriate questions in the lead up to May’s elections.
