Rare bird gets twitchers flocking to Barra     7/10/14

Twitchers are flocking to Barra in the hope of a catching a glimpse of a songbird never spotted in Scotland before.

The recent storm blew a scarlet tanager off course from the eastern seaboard of America.

Instead of migrating to South America for the winter it has ended up in the Hebrides.

Remarkably, the forest loving bird has found the only trees on Barra.

It has been spotted at Creachan, fluttering over a sparse copse of wind-beaten sycamores at forming a thin canopy over the winding single track road, a couple of miles north of Castlebay.

Yellow-green coloured feathers identify the visitor to be a young male - adult scarlet tanager show off a striking bright red coloured plumage.

Dozens of bird spotters have descended on the island to chase after the rarity providing a welcomed mini-tourism boom to Barra.

During daylight they were out all Tuesday with binoculars and long range lenses.

The twitchers have adopted the Castlebay Hotel as their headquarters.

Despite normally being a sluggish month for visitors, the hotel is buzzing with bird lovers who have travelled hundreds of miles to see the American straggler.
