An elderly Western Isles man is to stand trial accused of a series of rape and sex allegations against a number of different women.

Donald Macneil, 81, of Burnside, Daliburgh, South Uist, denies a total of 26 charges which date over a 40 year span.

An earlier trial over the same charges was abandoned part way through proceedings at Glasgow High Court in June after Macneil - who suffers from ill health - became seriously unwell.

A High Court spokesperson said ten days have been set aside for a trial which is due to start on 5 May 2015 at Aberdeen High Court.

A preliminary hearing took place at the High Court in Glasgow today.

Alleged incidents are said to have occurred in the Uists islands between the early 1970s and 2011.

A number of accusations are in relation to girls who were under 16 years at the time.

It is claimed Macneil behaved indecently towards girls over a number of years.

Macneil denies the allegations.
